About Sluggers Golf

From the Diamond to the Green: The Sluggers Golf Story

A Journey from Passion to Innovation

Sluggers Golf originated from a simple yet profound idea: to merge my lifelong passion for baseball with my newly embraced challenge in golf into one innovative creation. Having been an avid baseball player from the tender age of 4 until an ACL injury at 48 benched me, I've always sought solace and challenges in sports. After my recovery, I pursued golf seriously, discovering that it offered the personal growth and challenges I relished in baseball but with a focus on self-improvement rather than direct competition.

Inspiration and Creation

The concept for Sluggers Golf ignited while browsing Instagram, where I encountered an exorbitantly priced golf headcover styled like a baseball glove. This discovery sparked the thought, "Why not make my own?" Initially trying to craft it alone, I soon realized the need for expert craftsmanship and hired an experienced individual to assist in crafting the initial design. This pivotal decision helped create the first headcover, which quickly caught the attention of fellow golfers at tournaments. The enthusiasm and interest it generated were the catalysts for establishing Sluggers Golf.

Craftsmanship Meets Heritage

At Sluggers Golf, every headcover is meticulously handcrafted from upcycled baseball gloves. This process not only honors the rich texture and storied history of America's pastime but also meets the functional needs of golfers. My debut headcover, designed for a driver, was carefully constructed to retain its baseball essence while performing flawlessly protecting your clubs from damage. Its authentic look often tempted people to wear it!

Crafted with Heart and Soul

At the core of Sluggers Golf is not a pursuit of profit but the genuine joy of crafting unique pieces and witnessing customers' reactions upon receiving their custom-made headcovers. I take pride in personally delivering as many headcovers as possible, savoring the moments a customer sees their finished product for the first time. Your satisfaction is my ultimate motivation, driving me to create products that are not only special but also resonate personally with each customer.

A Unique, Personal Connection

Sluggers Golf transcends typical commercial transactions by fostering a connection through shared passions for golf and baseball, and an appreciation for handcrafted quality. Whether you're a golfer, a baseball fan, or someone who values handmade craftsmanship, our aim is to craft a headcover that truly speaks to you. Each piece is custom-made, ensuring no two headcovers are exactly alike, and each embodies a story of individuality and personal connection.

About the founder

Jeff Call
Founder and CEO of Sluggers Golf

Golf was an early love for me. It was the age of nine when I first began putting in the backyard with a childhood friend. We would dig holes, create makeshift flag poles out of sticks, and challenge each other in putting contests. Then, backyard play turned to par 3 courses. Unfortunately, as I got older, I didn’t have many friends that wanted to play golf, so by age 13 I turned to baseball. It became my sport and a huge part of my identity. It was always “Jeff the baseball player” and never “Jeff the golfer.”

Baseball continued to be my sport throughout my early adult years, and golf was something that only took place 1-2 times a year. I never took the game seriously, as I knew that it required a huge commitment and, if I let myself, I would become completely obsessed. So, I avoided the game. After all, I had a career and other obligations that took priority.

In my mid forties, I was still playing baseball and had a lot of fun participating in recreational leagues. However, that all changed on one Saturday afternoon in 2019. While running the bases, I felt a pop in my right knee and went down hard. That moment was as vivid as a black and white movie playing in slow-motion. I tried to sit up and realized this was more than a sprain. The next morning, I was informed by the Urgent Care physician that I had “most likely” torn my ACL. I knew that at 48 years old I had probably just played my last fast-pitch, hardball game.

After six months, two surgeries and hours upon hours of physical therapy, I was given the green-light to be active again. Shortly after that, a buddy of mine asked if I would go golfing with him, as he wanted to learn how to play. I immediately said “no” and told him that I wasn’t interested, as I didn’t have the time. The reality was that, if I took him up on his offer, I knew I would be trading one old obsession for a new one and, at my age, I would probably never get good enough to even be known as average. After a little persuading and a lot of name-calling, the peer pressure pushed me over the edge and I knew I was going all-in. I was now “Jeff the golfer.”

I immediately became enthralled with learning the game and all of the different aspects of the sport. One of these was unique and interesting golf club headcovers. I became the equivalent of a “sneakerhead” in golf. I would buy and collect headcovers and then buy and collect some more. After a few years of collecting, and seeing some fantastic designs, I decided I wanted to try and make my own. I had no idea where to begin, but I knew I would, little by little, figure it out.

One day, while browsing Instagram, I encountered a headcover that looked like it was made out of an old baseball. I realized that 90% of my headcovers were made out of leather and there was no better leather to start using than the kind from a baseball or a glove. That was the day Sluggers Golf was conceived. It wasn’t called Sluggers Golf then and it wasn’t even supposed to be a business idea; it was simply a way to take my old glove that had been collecting dust in my garage for five years and put it back into use.

I knew I wanted to integrate those memories of my youth and my love of baseball into my new love: golf. I didn’t want the glove to sit in a box for the next thirty years and, one day, get sold at a yard sale or an estate sale. I wanted to elevate it to its rightful place of respect and glory. I wanted to see my glove and remember my teammates, my friends, the ballparks and all of those wonderful memories I had while playing with my glove. The glove did not deserve to rot in a box in my garage.

With the help of a very talented seamstress, I was able to create my first headcovers. I never intended on selling them or turning this type of artistry into a business. I just wanted something unique to use as my headcovers.  The first time I took them out to the course, I got a lot of reactions. Many people would say: "those are awesome! where did you get them?” I shared that I made them and, after a lot of continued questions on the course, a fellow golfers asked: ”can you make me a set?” And that was when Sluggers Golf officially began - name and all.

Now that we have become an “actual” golf brand, it is my goal to continue to make high quality and unique golf club headcovers for people like myself. Sluggers Golf is for the guys and gals that want to see their memories taken out of the archives and put back into play and don’t want their glove, their dad’s, grandfathers’ or kids’ gloves rotting in a box. They want to be nostalgic and cherish old memories by continuing to use their gloves for a lifetime.

As a former baseball player, I can truly say that baseball players love “the long ball”. Every single one of us remember that feeling of squaring up on a pitch and hitting the baseball so hard that you barely feel the contact and then you immediately watch it sail over the outfielder's head. That feeling is what takes so many baseball players to the golf course.

When our knees give out and the shoulders become too stiff to make the throws, we all inevitably find our way to golf. Golf gives us that satisfaction of squaring up on a ball and watching it sail. We get to hit the long ball again, but what's even better is that a golf ball can go three times as far as a baseball would. And just like baseball, you are good if you can make that happen 1 out of 3 tries!

With golf you can work on your frustrations with the game until you're 100 and Sluggers Golf headcovers are able to last that long! We look forward to helping you live out your best memories and customize headcovers that are bound to inspire.
